Most troughs run perfectly well on an HDPE float. Some don’t. If you’re watering stock in fire country, under flogging UV, or on a run where the cockatoos have taken a liking to your plastic floats, fit the stainless one and forget about it.
The float is the cheapest part of a trough assembly and by far the most expensive one to have fail. A cracked plastic float fills with water, drops, and the valve simply stops shutting off. You find out when the trough’s been running over for three days and the tank’s empty.
This one is grade 316 stainless, the same marine-grade material as the rest of the Cocky Valve range. Sealed, buoyant, and unbothered by the things that finish off a plastic float.
Why you’d go stainless
- Fire. Burn-offs and grass fires melt plastic floats straight off the arm. Stainless doesn’t melt, it comes through discoloured and keeps working.
- Birds. Cockatoos, galahs and crows will strip a plastic float to pieces for something to do. There’s nothing here for them to get their beak into.
- Stock. Cattle, horses and rams lean on floats, mouth them and knock them about. Stainless dents where plastic splits, and a dented float still floats.
- Water chemistry. Grade 316 contains molybdenum, which is what gives it its resistance to chloride pitting. That’s the grade you want on bore, brackish and coastal water, not a lesser stainless.
- Sun. Years of Australian UV won’t make it chalky or brittle. It looks the same in ten years as it does the day you fit it.
Fits straight onto your existing gear
M10 coarse thread, the standard thread on Cocky Valve float arms. Unscrew the old float, screw this one on, set your level. No adaptors, no drama, no need to pull the valve body apart.
Choosing your size
More float means more buoyancy, and more buoyancy means more force pushing the valve shut. The higher your pressure, the bigger the float you want.
